Rare Chromosome Disorder Awareness Week: Petey

JUNE 16TH-21ST IS RARE CHROMOSOME DISORDER AWARENESS WEEK

Listed July 2022

"Petey"

Meet adorable "Petey"! Petey is 6 years old, and living in Southeastern Asia. He is diagnosed with Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome. Petey has a trach, and also uses a feeding tube.

Petey loves to learn about the world around him. He likes to play outside, and is incredibly caring.

Petey requires mechanical ventilation during sleep, and regular medical check ups. Developmentally, he lives a fairly normal life. Petey is able to eat independently. He can talk, but does so through his trach.

Petey's diagnosis is a result of a genetic mutation on chromosome 4p12. For more information, click here.

Petey had surgery at two months old to place a trach and feeding tube.

Could this handsome guy be your son? "Petey" is still young, there is still time to bring him home before the affects of being an orphan are too impactful. Click the link to make an inquiry!

UPDATE FEBRUARY 2023

Petey is now listed as "Paulo" with Holt International! His bio reads: He has the best smile! Caregivers describe Petey as a pleasant and charming little boy. His videos show him as joyful, silly, and playful. He is said to enjoy learning new things and likes exploring the world around him. Petey plays well with other children, takes turns, and cooperates. With his best friend, he enjoys playing pretend “house” and “kitchen”. He also has an interest in dinosaurs. Some of his favorite toys are dinosaur action figures and his favorite cartoon includes dinosaurs as the main characters. His nannies say he loves grilled chicken, fried pork, and rice. He will never turn down a meal with those ingredients. Caregivers say Petey shows affection to friends and familiar caregivers. When he is upset, he likes to be comforted with hugs. Petey takes initiative and understands the difference between right and wrong. He is said to seek the approval of adults and follows directions well. Nannies say he enjoys singing, dancing, and playing pretend. He can focus on a task at hand and independently completes activities of daily living. Petey’s caregivers say he speaks clearly, says sentences with 4 or more words, and can carry on a conversation. Petey previously spent long periods of time in the hospital because of health-related issues. However, with current treatment, caregivers say Petey can enjoy and participate in life just like the other children in his orphanage. An ideal adoptive family for Petey is familiar with medical care and can provide quick and easy access to children’s medical facilities. The adoptive family should be prepared for speech therapy and additional learning supports in school. They should also be familiar with trauma and institutionalization and their long-term impacts. "Petey" is such a precious little boy who would do so amazing in a family of his own. I pray his time comes soon. Could he be your son?

Madison Adoption agency staff recently got the chance to meet Petey! His update made me smile SO big. What a smart and wonderful boy he seems to be. Praying his mama comes soon! From MAA: Our staff met Petey in country this month! We have a TON of pictures and videos we'd love to share privately with an interested family. Our staff that met him said: Petey is HYSTERICAL. He loves dinosaurs and was impersonating them. He is TOO MUCH!!!! Petey has a BIG PERSONALITY for sure. He’ll definitely need to be the youngest, likely with teen-ish older sibs, as he dominates a room and needs to be the center of attention. He is SO SMART! He actually had just been released from the hospital THAT MORNING. As we were chatting, you could hear his trach gurgling, and he told the nurse it needs to be cleared out." Agency staff who met Petey also said "He is truly INCREDIBLE!!!! Smart, kind, funny, a leader, full of life, doesn't let his medical needs get him down. He will bless a family beyond measure!!!" The staff that met him adore him and say he's going to rule the world one day!

MAA staff met Petey in February of 2023. They fell in love with him and says he is Mr. Personality! Petey is a pleasant and charming little boy who was born with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS). This need requires mechanical ventilation during sleep and regular medical check-ups. Petey is otherwise healthy and is very interested in learning about everything around him. He enjoys a normal life like other children. Petey can run, jump, and kick a ball. He can feed himself. He can communicate well with others, though he must speak while wearing his tracheostomy tube. Petey loves to play with his friends and to imitate the caregiver’s role. Petey has had several bouts with pneumonia and other respiratory conditions. He had some convulsions when he was younger but was medicated for them. A CT scan in 2017 showed no abnormality. Petey is an adorable little boy, and we certainly can’t wait to find out who his lucky forever family will be!

Here is a blog post about Petey from the adoption agency that recently met him. There is more information, as well as the CUTEST audio recording of him singing Baby Shark! Y'all I mean it when I say this little boy is pure joy. I would adopt him if I was eligible, but unfortunately I'm not yet, so instead I advocate and pray that someone sees Petey's worth and beyond his medical needs. Someone go get this dino lovin ray of sunshine and make him your SON!
