UPDATE DECEMBER 2023

Emmeline is now listed as "Elena" with Carolina Adoption Services! Her update from Rainbowkids reads: Elena is a 4 year old girl looking for her forever family. She loves to receive attention and smiles and laughs when teased. She is able to turn from her belly to her back and vice versa independently. She enjoys sitting in her highchair and holding small toys. Elena loves when her caregiver sings to her and she enjoys listening to music. She can often be heard singing to herself before her afternoon nap. Elena is need of a loving, patient and caring family that can care for her special needs.

Emmeline is now listed as "Ellie" with Wasatch! This sweet girl has a long new update! It makes me so sad to know she is STILL waiting for her family. She's waited ever since she was a baby. Praying that 2024 is the year she finally goes home. Mama where are you? Agency staff met her in November 2023. From Rainbowkids: Emmeline did not mind my initial contact or my touching her.  She didn’t mind me tickling her or talking to her. She prefers to lie down, turn her body and wave her arms or move her legs occasionally.  Periodically the staff places Emmeline in a positioning chair, walker or baby feeding chair.  They usually try to keep her in a sitting position for about an hour to an hour and a half, but after that time she gets tired.  The staff then let her rest for a while in the crib or on a mattress on the floor.  She shares her room with 5-6 other children. Emmeline can track objects and people with her eyes.  She showed brief interest in a rubber bracelet with fringe and a glowing ball that I brought for her.  She rarely reaches for toys but can manage to hold a light, small toy for a while.  By the end of the meeting, she was sitting steadily in the baby highchair, with the support at her back.  She was constantly turning her head. I tried again to have her play with the bracelet and ball, and this time she tried to play with them while touching them with both hands.  During this time, she was making a singing song.  She then began to smile often.  Finally, she even managed to grab the rubber bracelet with her left hand. Emmeline likes to be sung to. While someone is singing,  she makes some peculiar, slightly cooing sounds. The teacher prefers to sing to the children rather than playing music. In principle, Emmeline listens and gets calmer hearing the singing.  She does not pay attention to a TV. Emmeline can't speak, doesn't say words, and cannot pronounce syllables.  She emits characteristic sounds that can also be heard during the video. Some of them sound obvious. By the sound and intonation, the staff can often tell if she is happy, tired, etc.  She eats pureed food and rarely gets sick. Emmeline uses a diaper.  She has no problem with water and bathing. She sleeps in the crib and has an afternoon nap there.  Her sleep is peaceful, she sings to herself before falling asleep. She doesn’t appear to have a preference for one staff person over the other. Emmeline is a sweet, fragile, and very gentle little child who needs lots of love, cuddles, personal contact, patience, understanding and individual attention and activities. Throughout our meeting, Emmeline was extremely calm, but often moved passively.  She definitely needs a loving and extremely supportive family environment where she would have the opportunity to be provided with lot of attention, stimulation and interaction.  She also needs more adequate and targeted activities and care, and more individual activities with specialists.

Emmeline is now listed as "Emily" with Children's House International! Her update reads: Emmeline spends the majority of her time lying down, but periodically she is also placed in a positioning chair, as well as in a walker and high baby feeding chair. Emmeline prefers to lie down turning around at times, waving her arms or moving her legs. The left hand is definitely more active. She likes to be sung to. Then she makes some peculiar, slightly cooing sounds. In principle, she listens, gets calmer - with music. She is a sweet, fragile, and very gentle little child who needs lots of love, cuddles, personal contact, patience, understanding, and individual attention and activities. Emmeline would easily adapt to a change of environment, when she has someone to hug her, talk to her, and get individual attention.

Our in-country representative visited Emmeline and describes her as sweet, fragile, and very gentle little child. While Emmeline spends most of her time lying down, she is placed into a supported sitting position for up to 90 minutes, including for feeding. Emmeline eats soft mashed foods from a spoon and drinks thicker liquids from a cup, both with help. She sleeps well and is cooperative during bathing. Although completely nonverbal, Emmeline makes frequent vocalizations by which the orphanage staff can distinguish some of her needs and feelings. Emmeline is calmed by music and especially enjoys it when someone sings to her. She works with a pedagogue, a PT, and a psychologist.

UPDATE MARCH 2024

Emmeline is now listed as "Elise" with Children's House International! Her update with Rainbowkids reads: Born into this world in 2019, Emmeline arrived with a unique constellation of traits known as Cornelia de Lange syndrome, primarily affecting her facial features. She's a delicate soul with a sweet disposition, and her gentle nature is simply heartwarming. This precious little one thrives on affection — she has an incredible capacity for love and blossoms with nurturing care that includes endless cuddles, tender personal interaction, and thoughtful understanding. She merits a patient touch and activities tailored just for her, which will provide not only pleasure but also enriching experiences. During our time together, Emmeline remained serene and composed, displaying a quiet passivity. My playful attempts to tickle and engage her elicited limited response initially, but as patience persevered, her awareness and interaction gradually emerged. Emmeline’s life would be beautifully complimented by a loving family atmosphere, filled with unwavering support and encouragement. A home that teems with warmth and offers plentiful one-on-one interaction, a trove of stimulating activities, and specialist involvement, would cultivate her growth and happiness. To the kind-hearted families contemplating the rewarding path of adoption: envision a life with Emmeline, where every day is an opportunity to nourish and celebrate a precious child’s potential, and where love knows no bounds.
