Diabetes Awareness Week: Tiana & Tenaya

JUNE 12TH-18TH IS DIABETES AWARENESS WEEK

Listed April 2022

"Tiana" & "Tenaya"

Introducing sweet sisters "Tiana" & "Tenaya"! Tenaya is 13 years old and diagnosed with leukemia, diabetes, and an intellectual disability. Little sister Tiana is 9 years old and healthy. These pretty girls are living in South America.

"Tenaya"

Tenaya has gone through so much in her 12 short years of life. She has battled cancer and health problems without the love of a family, and I can't even imagine how scary that must be for her.

Tenaya loves spending time with her sister and friends. She is more introverted, but is extremely affectionate and loving. Tenaya loves animals, especially bunnies, but cannot make contact with them as her caregivers try to keep her health as stable as possible. She loves to listen to stories, and feeling like she is a part of something. Tenaya's favorite foods are spaghetti, Chinese rice, and Colombian rice. She does not like to eat lentils or very sweet food. Tenaya loves playing with her dolls, pretending to be a chef, going to the pool, and taking walks. She always has a positive attitude, and is very resilient.

Tenaya shows respect to her caregivers and peers. She is not jealous when her caregivers show affection towards other children, and is very independent. Tenaya occasionally needs reminders and guidance to fulfill all her daily routines. She manages her emotions well according to her chronological age. Tenaya has a low IQ, and struggles with academics. She is shy when meeting someone new, and will typically wait for someone else to take initiative. Tenaya takes good care of her personal belongings. She does not show any anxiety.

As of April 2022, Tenaya was in the 3rd grade. She has received some psychological therapies since entering protection services, however these have not been consistent due to her health problems.

This part of her bio absolutely shattered me, as it is something no child should have to think about or fear. Tenaya has stated that "She gets sad whenever she cannot play with her peers due to her medical condition. Tenaya has stated that she is afraid of dying before having found her adoptive family."

Tenaya takes insulin for her diabetes.

Tenaya has been specifically diagnosed with Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, or ALL. This is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. While the survival rate is 92%, like any cancer it is still a tough journey with chemotherapy and other medications. Tenaya's academic setbacks are likely due in part to her having spent so much time in and out of hospitals. To learn more about how Tenaya's cancer directly impacts her, contact an agency.

A family interested in adopting these sisters should have access to a great child oncologist, endocrinologist, and therapists to help the girls process their trauma.

"Tiana"

Sweet little sis Tiana is a beautiful little girl! Like her older sister, Tiana is more quiet and shy, but she has lots of energy and is very outgoing! Her favorite activities are jumping, dancing, singing, and playing with her sister and her friends. Tiana likes to go for walks, and listening to music. She is described as a cheerful and quiet girl, and likes to participate in active games that require running. Though she has lots of energy, Tiana doesn't mind quiet activities like board games or dominos. She is very affectionate, and has many friends. Tiana likes receiving gifts, and playing with her stuffed animals. She is afraid of horror movies and insects. Tiana's favorite foods are spaghetti, lentils, and chicken with rice. She doesn't like onions.

Tiana is good at accepting change and adhering to rules. She has good social skills, and is a great student. Tiana can become jealous when her caregivers give affection to other children. She is still learning to manage her emotions. Tiana can follow instructions, but likes to complete things quickly. She is very independent, takes care of her belongings, and respects authority. Tiana can become anxious if things are not completed quickly or according to her time.

As of April 2022, Tiana was in 1st grade. She has received psychological therapy and has accomplished the goals of her therapist.

Tiana and Tenaya have a $500 grant towards their adoption with Madison Adoptions!

Both of these sweet girls have been through so much. Between physical trauma and medical trauma, they've experienced more than most adults. Still, they remain positive, hopeful and bonded to each other. I pray that "Tiana" & "Tenaya" don't have to wait much longer. Please see the worth of these two girls. Give them a chance to thrive in a family and be loved, cherished daughters.
