"Angelo"

Meet handsome and adorable "Angelo"! Angelo is 7 years old and living in South America. He is diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta and dwarfism.

Angelo is a precious little guy! He loves to play with bubbles, crafts, building towers, water, and painting. He is described as a social boy who is interested in everything going on around him. Angelo is affectionate, and loves to give hugs and kisses. He is tons of fun, and LOVES music and dancing with his caregivers!

Angelo can kick a ball with assistance, pedal a tricycle, and climb stairs with help. He can get undressed independently. Angelo can follow directions, and understands what is said to him. Videos show him walking independently, though unsteadily.

Dwarfism is a condition in which people are smaller than average, typically not being taller than 4'10 as an adult. There are many types of dwarfism, and can be caused by underlying genetic or congenital conditions. People with dwarfism may need surgeries to correct their abnormally small limbs and to assist with their breathing. Most people with dwarfism go on to lead fairly normal and independent lives.

In Angelo's case, he is diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also called Brittle Bone Disease. There are 3 different types of OI, with type 3 being a type of Dwarfism. This is also the most severe type, and children tend to have shorter arms and legs, a deformed chest and spine, breathing and swallowing problems, and a triangular shaped head. Individuals with OI are extremely susceptible to having fragile bones and low bone mass. While it is unclear which type of OI Angelo has, he does appear to use a wheelchair to get around. An agency can give more info about Angelo's diagnosis and how it affects him.

Angelo has $579.50 in his personal grant with Reece's Rainbow towards his adoption!

UPDATED SEPTEMBER 2023

UPDATE DECEMBER 2023

Angelo has made significant progress at his current institution. He really needs a family familiar with brittle bone syndrome to come forward for him soon! I am so sad to know that Angelo is STILL waiting. He is absolutely perfect and would make a family SO happy. Please let 2024 be the year Angelo finally goes home. He is so worthy and deserving of love and a family!

UPDATE MARCH 2024

Angelo is now listed as "Andy" with Holt International! His update reads: Angelo is described as cheerful, affectionate, and sociable. He has shown interest in what is happening around him, he likes to observe his environment, and learn more things. He is an active boy, even though he has some physical limitations. According to reports, his development is improving although he is still behind compared to peers. His ideal adoptive family will need to have access to medical specialists and ongoing therapy. It is best that Angelo is the only child or with much older teens in the home. It will be imperative that his new family can speak Spanish fluently and has access to Spanish-speaking specialists and doctors and well versed in TBRI. I can't believe this adorable and sweet boy is still waiting for a family to call his own. I know he would do so well in a family where he is loved, cherished, and treated like the son he is meant to be. Do you have room in your heart and home for Angelo? Don't keep him waiting!

UPDATE AUGUST 2024

Angelo is now listed as "Deimer" with CCAI! This sweet boy has a LONGGG update with several, adorable new photos! From CCAI: Sweet, young Angelo has faced significant challenges due to his brittle bone disease, which has resulted in multiple fractures in his upper and lower extremities. This condition has led him to rely on a wheelchair to prevent new fractures, significantly impacting his motor development. Despite these challenges, Angelo has shown the ability to make postural changes independently, transitioning from sitting to standing and even taking a few steps independently with support. He can also crawl and walk autonomously although he tends to sit or crawl when tired. While he retains normal muscle tone overall, he has experienced muscle weakness in certain leg muscle groups due to the reduced use of walking to minimize fracture risks. Despite these limitations, Angelo has managed to use his wheelchair autonomously, increasing his independence. When Angelo first arrived at the orphanage, he did not allow physical contact or close relationships with others. Today, he has become a child who enjoys giving hugs and kisses to those he trusts or feels comfortable with. Although he still exhibits some aggressive behaviors, these have significantly decreased. However, it is considered essential to continue specialized psychological interventions to support his adjustment and emotional development further. In previous educational experiences, Angelo has shown increasing sociability, displaying great interest in everything around him. Although he does not have verbal language, he demonstrates strong communicative intent. He is an excellent observer and communicates effectively through signs, making himself understood easily and clearly understanding what is being discussed with him. His fine motor skills have also improved, allowing him to engage in activities such as coloring, moving objects, assembling puzzles, stacking blocks, and making towers. However, due to his physical limitations and the risk of fractures, gross motor skills still need to be worked on. Instead, his therapy focuses on tactile and vestibular sensory integration to enhance his protection and sensory processing. Angelo has developed significant socialization skills, forming bonds with both peers and adults. He is very sociable, often laughing with adults, establishing eye contact quickly, and seeking affection and attention. He has also made notable progress in regulating his behavior, significantly reducing negative behaviors. Angelo now knows how to ask for permission, apologizes, and say thank you using signs, which he employs in many of his interactions. One of his favorite activities is swinging in a therapeutic bath or hammock. He enjoys sweet fragrances like baby oil and colognes and enjoys activities like puzzles or playing with tiles, though he requires adult supervision to maintain his focus. His participation in therapy has been instrumental in helping him regulate his behavior, extend his waiting times, and develop bonds of affection and closeness. With continuous support from his primary caregiver, Angelo has learned different routines and can perform certain activities autonomously, such as eating, washing his hands, and completing academic tasks on his tablet. Currently, Angelo receives care at the orphanage through occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy. Additionally, he receives support from a behavioral psychology team, which focuses on strengthening his emotional and affective development and improving his behavioral responses. Angelo also benefits from monthly attention from the social work department. Given his complex needs, it is considered important to provide support and evaluation from the area of neuropsychology. Angelo suffers from several medical and developmental conditions, including brittle bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta), a speech and language developmental disorder, cognitive delay, and an unspecified conduct disorder. These diagnoses necessitate comprehensive care and therapy to support his development and well-being. His potential adoptive family will need to be on top of his treatments and diagnoses.

Angelo is now listed as "Dawson" with Lifeline! His update reads: Angelo loves playing with bubbles, painting, and playing tag. He also likes doing crafts, building towers, stacking games, and playing with action figures. He also enjoys playing in the water and swinging in a hammock. He enjoys showing affection through hugs, kisses, and fist bumps!

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2024
Angelo has an update with Madison! His update reads: Angelo is able to kick a ball forward with help, throw a ball over his shoulder and catch a ball with rebound most of the time. He is able to pedal a tricycle and climb the stairs with help. He is able to undress. His motor coordination is good, which makes it easier for him to string objects. Angelo has a good understanding of orders, knows and recognizes language.

UPDATE OCTOBER 2024
Angelo was recently visited again by agency staff, and has updated photos AND videos! He is absolutely precious, and I hope and pray that he doesn't have to wait much longer. Videos show Angelo interacting with his peers and caregivers. He did not speak, but appeared to understand everything that was being said to him, and shook his head no and followed commands. When he wanted the attention of one of the staff members, he lightly touched her face, but was redirected to tap her shoulder which he did.
